Dale Jr. answered any and all questions this weekend about how the new
generation cars would change the way nascar was. The new cars made
restrictor plate racing exciting again, bringing back the all but
forgotten slingshot pass. Thanks to the larger rear wing, and improved
aerodynamics overall, it seemed drivers had much more control over
their cars, and it improved racing substantially. Kurt Busch had to
resort to his #2 car for the race, giving up pole position to Toyota's
Michael Waltrip. He bravely held on to the lead for the opening few
laps of the event, but eventually was swarmed upon by an extremely fast
field.
The final 2 laps of the event had the front runners running 3 and even 4 wide. Stewart used the low line where Earnhardt Jr utilized the high line. Going into turn 3 on the final lap Earnhardt changed his strategy, and went to the low line, thus blocking Stewart. Unfortunately this left the door open to Jimmie Johnson. This wasnt enough for Jimmie, though. Earnhardt eventually regained his lead and won the race for an ecstatic Rick Hendrick, who greeted Jr. on his way to victory lane.
