Troy Bayliss did the Double in Phillip Island, winning race one by a very large margin, and winning race two as well. All of this was accomplished with an elbow injury sustained the day before in practice. Riding with 8 stitches in his elbow, it didnt seem to slow him down, and he was ecstatic to win in front of his home crowd for his last race ever at Phillip Island. Race 1 went off well without much drama, involving a great battle up front for second position. Bayliss checked out in the later stages of the race, but Xaus, Nieto, Fabrizio, and second place finisher Corser put on a great show for the Australians.
Race 1 Results:
Race two was much more dramatic, right off the bat Vittorio Iannuzzo of Team Pedercini Kawasaki, unable to see in front of him from other riders, crashed into the side of the stalled Factory Ducati of Michel Fabrizio, ripping off Fabrizios boot, and breaking Iannuzzo's wrist. Iannuzo was transported to a Melbourne Hospital, and unfortunately was diagnosed with a two month recovery time. There were multiple Jumped starts, including Czech rider and Toyota 200 podium finisher "Kuba" Smrz. The biggest event with potential impact on the season was Max Biaggis high speed crash, leaving him with a rumored broken wrist. Bayliss, being one of the leading riders to have not jumped the start, rode off to his second win of the weekend in front of his home crowd.
